The Forgotten Tramway

A 1955 map of the area has revealed that a tramway was constructed, in the 1930's, from the Powerhouse to almost the shore to transport the sand from the Cabin Hill area. The gauge was half an inch less than 2 feet and a diesel locomotive pulled the tipper wagons.Sidings were constructed at the Powerhouse and an embankment built so the wagons could tip their load into British Railways wagons. The tramway followed the Formby boundary but nothing now remains. It has been said that the tramway was later extended North, close to the beach, but the West end of the track shows no evidence of this. The tramway ceased to be used in the early 50's but was not removed for some years after. It also turns out that a narrow gauge railway was constructed in the early 1900's from Formby Station to Formby on Sea via Andrews Lane and Cambridge Rd to carry the building material. What is thought to be part of the track has been found.
